WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A
JUSTICE OF THE PEACE
Justices of the Peace (JPs) are judicial officers commissioned by the State and charged with a number of duties, including performing wedding ceremonies. Because of their legal responsibilities, a JP must have integrity and a strong sense of fairness and sound judgment.
Excellent communication skills, especially public-speaking, are essential. An increasing number of couples are selecting a JP in the belief that it's a more personal and secular alternative to a church wedding where religious rituals and traditions have to be adhered to.
Most JPs are open to unconventional ceremonies and advertise for all types of weddings, including same-sex ceremonies. While it used to be that JPs were associated with elopements and courthouse nuptials, nowadays they can be found performing ceremonies of all types in all sorts of places.
In the end, whether planning a large formal wedding or casual garden party, a couple should look for a JP who will be work with them to create a ceremony that reflects their relationship and the partnership they are building.
